Six degrees of separation is the idea that all people are six, or fewer, social connections away from each other. As a result, a chain of acquaintances can be made to connect any two people in a maximum of six steps. It was originally set out by Frigyes Karinthy in 1929 when societies became global and the world became smaller.
I found it fascinating to think that our interactions and relationships would cascade through this network, influencing the lives of people we don’t directly know, or stranger even, the lives of everyone on this planet.
Degrees of Separation is a spacial sequencer, meditating on Frigyes’ idea. 8 rooms each have a pitch control, with the sequencer stepping through them forming an 8 step musical pattern. When a visitor interacts with one of the pitch controllers their small contribution changes the musical loop and the experience of all listeners. Humanity introduces chaos into the repetition. The separation of the visitors in the space disappears through the sound they mutually experience.
